My washer won't agitate or spin the laundry?

It fill up fine and drains fine, and makes a noise when it's time to agitate or spin (like the motor is running but not making anything move). But my laundry is coming out not so clean and very wet. Any ideas what it might be and whether or not it's expensive to fix it?

Have you watched it agitate? If it is a model that stops when the lid is up - find the contact point and hold it down; this way you will be able to see if the agitator is functioning. If it is currently empty, unplug it and pull it out about a foot; find something about 12" high that you can use to support the machine. Look under the machine; in the middle there is a round pulley wheel and has a rubber belt around it, then again the belt may be off. If, by chance it is off, slip it back on. If the belt is broken or appears too loose, take the belt to a hardware store and get another and install. Good luck.

Your machine is probably a Direct drive model that uses a simple 3 piece coupling between the motor and the tranny. If you wash a rug or blanket in this machine or wash on the wrong water level then the coupling will break. or overtime it simply fails like everything else. It is a fairley easy repair and this washer is designed to be repaired without moving it. To get to your part you must remove the cabinet. Go to this website for a better explaination:

it could be a broken belt or a bad transmission, pull the washer out and see if it is leaking oil, if it is the tranny is shot and very expensive to fix I had a repair man out to replace a drive belt on my washer, it cost me $75.00 parts and labor

Not all machines are built or operate the same way. I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't answer any more questions unless the asker gave a slight indication as to what they had. There is no indication here of front load or top load, whether its GE or Whirlpool or Maytag or.....But here I am....going to try the impossible and answer one of these unfinished questions.

I'm going to do the dunb thing and assume....first, its a top load machine....second, its a Whirlpool built machine. Now I'm going to give the magical answer.... the drive coupler is broken. There is no sense telling you how to fix it 'cause so far...I'm only guessing

Ours did this and the appliance repairman replaced two relay coils. But ours didn't overflow, you may have two issues with that machine.

when that happened to me, the basket i guess can get off it's track. the whole front panel of washer comes off. i had a repairman do it for me. he put basket back on it's frame and it worked again.
