Fiberglass is cheap and doesn't keep its R-value as the temperature differential increases. Cellulose is a recycled material from shredded newspaper. It is also flame retardant and not irritating. I would use cellulose and rent the machine to blow it in. It should cost about $.30 - $.75 cents a square foot to bring your attic to R-50. If the machine cannot be had, I have seen people spread it from bales by hand or with a shop vac.

It depends on the insualation. Take it from me though. I priced the cost of self insulating my attic and it was going to cot about $3000 with that cellulose insulation (it is made from fibrous materials that degrade and pack down and will need to be replaced after a few years) and got a few estimates for blown in rock wool insulation and had that company do it for me for only $1000 and they brought me up to an R-50. That being said, it also depends on what you already have up in the attic and what type of insulation you will be putting in. My rock wool is about 10 inches deep. in a 2100 square foot home.
