automatic garage door being broken into..?

Here is my situation. We have an automatic garage door. Two people use the garage, we both have garage door openers as well. Other than the garage door, the only other entrance to the garage is always locked. The garage door has been discovered open three times now, when both garage users are certain they closed the garage door. We need to figure out what the issue is so our cars stop being vandalized. Any ideas?

It sounds like there's an obstruction and the garage door opens back up again automatically.



Or, someone has broken the code - have you ever seen the inside of the remote? - You can rotate the frequency around. It takes a long time and it's annoying, but someone can find the right one and get in.



You could put up a hidden camera, or a FAKE hidden camera.



...Or, you could unplug the opener and issue keys to that door. When someone comes home, they plug it back in, open the door, close it, then pull the plug again.



Hey, does the door open manually? - you might need to disable the door if it opens that way.

1. Start using the lockout button on the door opener. This stops rogue transmitters from also opening your door. This will mean all owners will need to go in through the man door and unlock the operator on the key pad in the garage, then open the door.

#2. Take your camcorder and set it on slowplay and hide it on a shelf in the garage. Aim it so it covers the man door and as much of the overhead door as you can. Check it daily.

#3. Put a deadbolt lock on the man door. Some regular key knobs are really easy to get unlocked with a credit card.

#4. Ask a neighbor who is home a lot to watch your garage for just one week. Offer to pay them for this one week service and split the cost with your garage partner.

Another quick possibility:

There is also something known as "phantom operation." This is when there is something in proximity to your opener that is on a similar frequency to your remote control and causes the door to open unintentionally. This problem is remedied by one of two means:

(1) clear out the receiver's "memory" and re-code all remotes or

(2) purchase a new receiver/remote kit to use on your opener.

If everyone is certain the door was completely closed when they left this could very well be the issue. Have a merry CHRISTmas!

here what i did,run the power from the garage door opener to the side entry door of the garage,and put a light switch to cut the power to the opener off and on,when you close opener for the night turn the switch off and in the morning when you go out turn the switch on, its like turning on a light in the garage,you kill all power to the opener and you can't open the door from the outside,hope this helps.

Try to watch the door to make sure it is down before you either drive away or go into the house.



It is very easy for the door to start to go down but then go back up because it hit an obstruction of some sort. It could be something like the pull rope on the door gets in the way of the electric eye safety sensor.
