You have a bad diverter in the faucet. You will have it replaced. You can do ot if your "handy". If not, call a plumber.

You have a faulty diverter valve. This is an easy fix, but takes some care when handling the valve inner workings. First, remove the bath faucet that hold the diverter valve. Remove the insides by unscrewing the locking nut. Pull out carefully the internal workings, taking note of the placement of these parts. Wash the internal workings in a soapy solution and also the inside of the cavity. You might want to look at the 'O' rings and judge whether they are serviceable; if not, your local hardware store will have replacement 'O' rings. Refit the unit's internal valves and refit the whole unite to the bath, using PTFE tape so as not to leak when the threads are tightened.

You don't say where the diverter valve for the shower is, (that's the thing you pull, push, or turn to make the water come out of the showerhead)

If it's on the tub spout, the only thing you can do is replace the spout. If it's by the hot & cold water taps, then probably the rubber seals have gone bad and need to be replaced. For that, it's best to call a plumber.

If you faucet uses a shower diverter on the faucets spout, replace the O-ring inside the spout, or replace the spout.

If you have a three handle tub and shower faucet, remove the middle faucet handle and stem. take the diverter stem with you to the hardware store or faucet repair center.

your tub distributor isnt working right. the gasket thing-a-ma-jig is leaking. some water is going to the tub, some is going to the shower. tub distributors are a hard fix. sorry. you can go to home depot/lowes, buy a new one, and ask for instructions on how to do it but it's a hard install for a novice.

FYI, you might want to remove the shower head and clean it. that might help a little bit. GL with it!

i meant diverter, not distributor. same thing.

It is quite easy to replace the tub spout with the shower switch in it. Buy a good one that will not leak at a home center or plumbing supply and simply unscrew the one you have and replace it. Use teflon tape to keep the threads from leaking.
