I have a question about lawn mower blades. I have three riders, two Kubotas and one John Deere. Each are used 2-3 hours per week in the growing season. How often should the blades be sharpened on these mowers. Is once per season enough? Is it to much?

Listen to the engine. How much work the engines do tell you when to sharpen the blades.

Sounds like a silly answer, but ask any engineer.

If you are using each mower 3 hours a week you need to sharpen the blades at least twice a year because that is a lot of mowing you are doing. You cant hurt the blades by sharpen them twice a year. I have a set of blades I have sharpen twice a year for 20 years. The only way you can hurt them is not knowing what you are doing.

To answer your question, you need to actually look at the blades, if the leading edge is rounded off they need sharpening. Doesn't matter how long it has been since they were last sharpened. And by the way that C%^&* about stress fractures is just that..a lot of uneducated bull s%^&*

once per season is the best. if you sharpen to much you will hurt the blades. the will become thin and have stress fractures all through the blades.
