There is a distinction, but in the industry it is considered the same thing. Wrought iron, forged steel, it all really depends on the gate that you are looking for. How much design you want on the gate, size of , frame, type of pickets ,do you want sheet metal? Most gate companies contribute a lot of the cost on the actual work and design implemented on the gates. I work in the business but on the supplier side.

I however also know a large amount of companies accross the US, and i can reccomend someone in your area. Check out at www.gatestore.com Call the number and one of our reps can help you find a reputable company in your area, and possibly answer any other questions you might have.

Yes wrought iron and steel are two different things, however, 'wrought iron' seems to have become a generic term for a lot of things which are actually mild steel, such as 'wrought iron' hanging basket brackets, and indeed gates.

95% of gates are made from mild steel now due to cost and the fact that it is easy to work with, form scrolls etc. I suggest you enquire about steel gates in future as that is what most gate companies will quote you for.

Hope this helps.

An iron gate is made from wrought iron. It has a rough look and feel to it. A steel gate is a smoother finish.

They are very close to the same. It just depends on the look you are going for.

Good Luck!

Strictly speaking, one's made from iron & t'other is made from steel.

I'd bet, though, that all of them are steel these days. It's because steel is easier and quicker to work with, they just bend and weld steel strip, whereas iron would require more blacksmith skills.

Hope that helps
