The washing machine drain hose connects to a stand pipe in the laundry cupboard. I think it's blocked as it's causing a disgusting smell. The washing machine has recently been cleaned out (with hot water and vinegar) so it's not that. Also, the washing machine has tended to leak a little - we were advised this might be due to the drain/gutters being blocked and water flowing back but my husband is sure the water is coming from the machine itself, not from the pipe.

In any case it's going to be difficult to sort out the drains as we live on the third floor of an apartment block! I'm not even sure where the drains are.

I pulled the hose out of the stand pipe this morning and it was all brown and mildewy. Any ideas how we can unblock this? Will sink unblocker work?

if the pipe is truly blocked the water will spew all over the place. the drainer pump in the washing machine will see to that! sounds like the pipe needs cleaning out.

I had an analogous concern a pair of years in the past, and have been given a gadget from QVC,a plunger with a can of compressed air related, which grew to become into good for 20 photographs, you place the plunger over plug hollow, conceal it with approximately 3 inches of water, block the overflow with a textile and press the button, mine in straightforward terms took a million shot,by no capacity had the concern considering the fact that.

Get some Jeyes fluid from a hardware store, pour it down the standpipe and leave for as long as you can. Then give it a flush out.

If it's really bad, get some caustic soda.

Since you live in an apt, you would need to ask the landlord/apt manager what they recommend.............not doing so may cause problems with other tenants and their drains
