oozing black junk probably isn't normal, could it be a drain backup further down the pipe? What is in the black stuff (im guessing poo and whatever else is flushed =/)? and what should i do, call a plumber?

has anyone watched the dirty jobs episode where the toilet explodes in the basement and mike rowe is one of the cleanup dudes? could such a thing happen to me?

sounds like your main sewer line is backing up - if when you use any drain in the home and water comes up from the floor drain , good indication of a main sewer line back up - main sewer lines back up out of the lowest point, this case your basement floor drain - worst case , city sewer issue - if surrounding neighbors drains are ok , your problem is isolated to your home only - black material is everyday waste - all in all , contract a licensed plumber ------

There is a good chance that since it is a floor drain in the basement the city sewer connection might possibly be full and backing up into your house. Its usually caused by floods or heavy rainfall and a city liftstation becoming overwhelmed.

If it keeps happening, have a plumber install a valve on the drain and close it every time it rains heavily.
