The main reason lawnmowers don't start is fuel. Either the fuel is old or the carburator is plugged up. With a few simple tools cleaning the carburator is a fairly easy job. It needs to be removed, taken apart, cleaned with a good parts cleaner and reassembled with a carb rebuild kit. Also check the fuel tank for water and dirt. Water will look like a blob in the bottom of the tank and there should be no dirt at all in the tank. I assumed when you said you checked the spark plug you meant it has spark. Did you check to see if it has spark?

The _lawn mower_ serial number is useless; you need to get the ENGINE serial number. It's usually stamped in metal near the spark plug or other easy-to-reach location. It's not buried in the engine itself, but the engine might be buried in the lawn mower (and therefore it might be difficult to read the entire s/n).

A briggs & stratton engine s/n will have roughly 17 or 18 digits containing the model, type, and code numbers. See the sources below for more details.

I am certain that once you obtain the proper information, you'll be able to find a carb rebuild kit on most small engine parts websites.

There are very few moving parts you need to worry about. Mostly all you need to do is disassemble them and spray them out with a carb cleaner. Wear safety glasses, that stuff ALWAYS finds its way into my eyes when I clean a carb.

If your carb has a fuel pump (on the side, sort of rectangular looking cover) then you can get a new membrane at a lawn mower repair shop. But you'll need the number off the motor. But usually they're just about all the same size.

As for a fuel bowl system, you might need to replace the needle valve and seat. But again, a lawn mower shop will likely be able to get you what you need.

Oh, and stop wasting time and money on Sears. Their business is in selling stuff. Not helping you fix stuff. They'd rather sell you a new mower than a gasket kit. But kits are available. Go to "Briggs n Stratton" and find a place to enter your model number (on the engine). There you'll find every part for your engine, including gasket kits.

Hope this helps.

Most Craftsman mowers had either Briggs and Stratton or Tecumseh engines. If you remove the carburetor and bring it to any small engine shop they will likely have a kit in stock. If they don't have it they can easily get one. Many small engine repair shops don't rebuild carburetors anymore. When parts and labor are considered it is more practical to replace it.

Try the Yellow Pages under lawn & garden equipment. Most shops will show the logos of the manufactures' equipment that they sell and service. Sears uses B&S which is widely used on other equipment.

Be carefull with the carb spray inside the carburetor. I cleaned out the B&S carb on my Craftsman leaf vacuum and it dissolved a soft plastic seal that a shaft ran thru. I went to the Sears Service Center a few miles away for the part and was told they didn't have them. The store did have a wall display of replacement parts in plastic bags so I looked them over and found the part in a rebuild kit. Sheesh!

I believe you are going to have to look the motor type up and look for a carb kit that way. I am pretty sure there would be a small engine shop in your town. Go there and ask them to help you with obtaining the kit. Personally I would go to home depot or lowes and ask if they have what I need. Sears doesn't really make these things, they contract them out and stamp their name on the product.
