Well I'm living in an apartment and the heater's aren't working at the moment and I'm so damn cold. It's -8 degrees outside! Is it safe to turn on the stoves in the kitchen to create heat around here?

No. Do not turn on the stove for heat. If you have been baking in the oven you can leave the oven door ajar after the oven is turned off but do not turn on the oven with the door open.

Also, do NOT bring a barbecue grill inside to burn for heat and same goes for a generator if the power goes out. If you have no heat you are better to stay with a friend or relative until the heat is back on again. If you have had utilities shut off due to non-payment there is energy assistance available in most areas of the USA and Canada.

I hope you find a warm place to be ASAP!

Please, call your landlord, get the heaters fixrf ASAP. Meanwhile, yes, you could turn the stove on, if gas, you will need to crack open the kitchen window )not a big crack, just enough to let fresh air in) If it's electric, go for it, but be careful for nothing left on top of the stove (no matter what kind of range), or, instead, turn on the oven.

I agree, if you can bake some cookies, or soemthing, boil some water, drink hot cocoa or something (just plain hot water) will help you warm up.

If it is gas--DO NOT let it run more than a few minutes, so you won't take a chance of passing out, etc.

Think warm thoughts, Take care.

I grew up in what you might call ghetto. You do what you got to do to get by.

The stove was used to cook on when we was hungry and to warm the house up when we was cold. I remember my dad would put his wet work boots on the opened door of the stove to dry over night.

Dont have any flammable or combustibles near by.

I would crank that bad boy up, stretch out and sleep about 3 feet away. A large pot on top 3/4 full of water on boil will put humidity back into the room and help raise the temp and keep your sinuses from drying out. It also serves as a redneck fire extinguisher if you need.

Think of that stove as a big heater.

It aint safe if your a sissy city slicker who has no common sense. Whats not safe is -8 degrees outside and no heat.

DO NOT BRING A GAS GRILL OR ANYTHING THAT PRODUCES CARBON MONOXIDE INSIDE BECAUSE IT WILL KILL YOU.

I might be a redneck, but this country boy and his familly will survive.

Yes, we have had to do it and worked out well. You can shut the door to your kitchen to keep the heat in one room if you need to and put a mattress and sleep on the floor. We opened the oven door, and had instant heat. You don't want to have anything near it that would catch fire though. Is the stove electric? It would be safer than gas. Gas always seems scarier as I would worry if the pilot light would go out and the room filling up with gas.

Hell no man if its a natural gas stove that says Carbon Monoxide poison all over go to wal-mart and buy one of those $20 space heaters and sit next to it What your talking about is a real serious fire hazard

not really. if you have an electric oven you could probably turn it on and leave it open a bit but i wouldn't do it if there are kids because they could get hurt and don't leave it unattended and don't do it for really long periods of time. maybe an hour or so. thats what i would do, but not if it's gas and the stove wouldn't create mutch heat anyhow the oven would.

Its not safe if you are just going to leave them on but if you're really cold bake a cake or cookies or something. The oven will heat the apartment really fast and you get a yummy treat.

We always did that and left the door open- with our gas stoves and it was always safe. I'm not sure if you have an electric stove if it makes a difference.

No...it's not safe to use the stove as a heat source. Go to another location (friends/families house) if possible. If that's not an option...dress warm and wrap up in blankets...drink hot fluids like tea, coffee, cocoa...BE SURE TO REPORT THIS TO THE LANDLORD IMMEDIATELY AND DEMAND THAT SOMETHING BE DONE TONIGHT

No, that's a bad idea - almost as bad as making a fire pit in the living room.

Go buy a space heater. They're under $50 US.

Call your landlord. Its illegal in some states to have an apartment building at less than 65 degrees.. and without working heat.

If it is electric you could run it for a while.

The best thing to do is bake something, then you are being productive at the same time.

yes and no, just make sure you have an adaquete source of ventalation, like using a fan that can blow the carbon monixide fumes outside. but its best not to, just use the furnace.

Not safe, but maybe you should try baking cookies or something. the oven will heat it right up. plus you'll have snacks
