Question:
Smeg dishwasher not working after 18 months!?

We didn't buy the Smeg dishwasher, the previous home owners bought it and when we moved in they kindly left us manuals/invoices for all the major kitchen goods.
I found an invoice for a local appliance centre and it said they supplied and installed it. I called them up and they said they would come out and have a look but it's a £50 call out fee. They said it was OUT OF WARRENTY. The invoice said December 2010.
I didn't use this company as they have already come out and not been able to fix our fridge/freezer and charged a hefty call out fee. I used another local company and they came this morning to have a look.
There are 3 things wrong with it and it seems he has fixed the 2 minor probs. The first was rotating blades keep seperating, he just fixed them back together. The second is the doo won't close, he wiggled the dishwasher out a bit and it did close but still didn't look right, he said dishwasher wouldn't start if the locking device wasn't working (I am paranoid about it springing open and scalding water hitting my toddler!). The third problem is that is keeps cutting out and from the manual I can see that this is due to an ANTI FLOODING device. The chap put the dishwasher on and left, but it has stopped working again. Before he left I said what if it cuts out and he said well as its SMEG, by the time the new parts come and the sheer cost of the parts you might as well get a new dishwasher! I feel a bit cheated that I paid him £15 to not really do anything. (The blades I can fix myself and I use a chair to wedge the door shut)/
So I am annoyed now as a new dishwasher is a few hundred quid, I am thinking surely a SMEG dishwasher wouln't break after just a short space of time.
I have called Smeg and they said they can put me through to a smeg engineer and they can have alook but they also charge etc etc.
Does anyone know anything about consumer rights, I would understand if it was say 5-10 years old but its not even 2 years old and even though we didn't buy it, it's an expensive make?

Most electrical appliance require a call out fee after an item is out of warranty. This is why all electrical companies push you to buy the extended warranties as a product reaches the end of the guarantee.

You did well to even get someone to look at it for £15 if you are honest.

Go to Smeg. Yes you will have to pay for it, but if you cannot afford a new one you really do not have a choice do you. Smeg will look at it and know exactly what they are doing with it.

Smeg may if you ask after that repair offer an extended warranty.

You have no rights at all on this. If you were the original owner and had had consistent issues with it then you would have naturally taken out the extended warranty as time went by. It is out of warranty so it is just the way it is. Your expectations are a little high on this one I am afraid even more so as the second owner.

Comet have a clearance auction site for damaged and ex display goods and I buy all my items there and treat them as being fairly disposable as well.

It would be less money in the long run to buy a basic no frills dishwasher. You will quickly pay the same money trying to repair the one you have considering parts, labor, service calls and extended warranty and you will still have a dishwasher prone to breaking down. I can tell you this from experience, My wife has killed many a good dishwasher over the years. Each time I would buy one with a little higher price. Did not matter, it would be trash in a couple years. Dishwasher I have now I bought from a friend who was remodeling his kitchen. He had bought it a couple months prior from an apartment complex that had bought too many and did not need it. It is the most basic GE model made and so far it has been indestructible and does a great job. High price does not necessarily mean high quality.

Take Smeg to task about this, yes it will cost you but may wind up being cheaper than replacing it. Without seeing it for myself I'll say they weren't installed properly which is why you're having so many issues.

Smeg in the states is marketed as a high-end Euro line of appliances, and do not appear to be a subsidiary of another manufacturer, meaning their parts are produced exclusively for their products. When meeting with their staff engineer or public relations agent discuss getting an extended service agreement through them so they will continue to support your appliances.

Good luck.

Cheaper appliances today come with an AMF warranty. Which basically means "adios mother phuqer", once the 90 day or 6 month warranty is up!

there is quite little or no data to help the actuality that NAFTA leads to interest loss. a extensive factor to generating is components and capacity, a lot of that are imported tariff loose because of the fact of NAFTA, likewise fee lists do no longer benefit a employer upon merchandising an extremely final product, they benefit the government. yet another factor is that it is not quite Clinton who's totally to blame for NAFTA. He did sign it into regulation, sure. although NAFTA exchange right into a joint law drafter Predominantly by making use of Bush Sr. and Canada's Brian Mulroney. interest loss is without delay proportional to financial gadget, no longer NAFTA. even with each and every thing NAFTA exchange into around 10 years in the past while interest creation exchange into hitting checklist highs, and the yankee production sector exchange into booming. interest loss is the effect of an risky financial gadget, risky industry, and interest. no longer NAFTA. yet another considerable and frequently neglected killer of the yankee production sector is the commonplace American. people do no longer prefer to pay for American products, they are extra costly, through all those pesky labour standards. rather, all of us rush all the way down to the interior sight walmart like a p.c.. of farm animals and purchase 6 pairs of $3 footwear. it is the project, no longer NAFTA, no longer Clinton.
