How to install vinyl siding over stucco?

I have a stucco house, but it's this ugly swoop pattern, not the common "popcorn". If it looked good I wouldn't consider covering it, but it doesn't, it's horrible! Under the stucco is about 3/4" wood boards - they are very solid, Oak I think. The boards are each about 12" wide. There are no gaps between the boards. I want to put vinyl siding over the top but am wondering if I can skip the furring strips.

My thinking is that I can screw or nail the siding into the 3/4" wood behind the stucco. Is this correct? The reason why I want to skip the furring strips is because of the window trim and time. It would be faster and I wouldn't have to do anything special with the windows.

Brick and stucco require some serious maintenance if you want to care for them properly. Vinyl just basically needs to be washed down when it shows the dirt. Brick should be repointed and check for signs of wear on a regular basis. My neighbors home is stucco and it is failing miserably (due to the fact that they assumed it was maintenance free.) Now they have some serious interior repair to do where the water has gotten into their home where the stucco has failed. Plus vinyl has come a LONG way. There are some really nice options now.

it would be best to use furring , because it would take an awful long nail to put the siding up!plus you would not want to draw the nail up tight to accomplish the attachment! siding should be nailed with some room for expansion & contraction! if this can be accomlished with approriate fastener go for it!Just use "J' channel around windows &doors!

You could put blown in insulation in the walls from the outside then a half inch of Styrofoam insulation as you put the new siding on.
