I KNOW-I KNOW...it's like 90 degrees outside and I am asking about heaters! Anyway I live in an apartment where the heat is not controlled by the tenent. Can anyone recommend one that they have tried or heard good things about? I really don't want to use a kerosene heater!

I agree. I've owned 2 of the radiator style heaters and they work very well. They put out a tremendous amount of heat for the energy they consume. Buy a good brand though like a Honeywell or other well known brand. I made the mistake of buying the Walmart special for $19.99 and it only lasted about 6 weeks. A very important thing to remember about this style of heater is to make sure you have adequate clearance wherever you place it as they radiate heat from all sides including the bottom as opposed to other heaters which only produce heat out the front.

KOHA got it correct. I own at least 8 electric heaters of various styles and the radiator heater is without doubt the safest and produces a quality heat. This type is especially good if there are pets in the home. Pet's can knock things and get them next to a heater which can cause a fire.

PS: It would be a good idea to have a smoke detector in the area of the heater.

They make a great compact "Catalytic" heater that runs on Butane or Propane for in garages and such. No flame, and high heating efficiency, no liquid to spill, one of my friends used one to heat a sailboat cabin in Boston Harbor thru the winter. Unvented heaters are never recommended for sleeping areas, Butane or Propane will not produce poisonous carbon monoxide but they do consume the oxygen in the room so a window must be opened an inch or so for fresh air and the oxygen that comes with it, for kerosene heaters too!

there are these heaters called "warehouse" heaters. its small, metal and shaped like a box. it has a fan inside and heated coils. its very easy to control how much heat it lets off and because of the fan it moves the air very well. one of these heaters heats all of my two bedroom apt. best of all they are cheap (in price). look for them at Costco or Target or Wal-mart. oh yeah they also have safety features like it will automatically shut of if knocked over. other good ones are the ones shaped like a tall steam heater, but its electric. its filled with some kind of liquid that gets real hot. there also easy to control the temp, but they are more expensive, bigger, and will only heat one room. hope you find a good one. and be very careful with the one you get. electric heaters cause a lot of fires in the winter.

An electrically heated oil filled radiator. It’s safer than heaters with open flames or glowing elements and produces no fumes. It’s also portable, convenient and efficient. It works with 115v. Wall outlet, consumes 1500 watts and cost under 50 bucks.

Dennis got it wrong . Liquid gas DOES produce carbon monoxide when incorrectly burnt. Keep away from liquid fuels, they produce their own weight of WATER when burnt. Your best bet would be a small electric blower type.
