The roofer is recommending that we replace the 4 skylights at the same time. My inclination is to replace the flashing and leave the skylights as they are. He says skylights have a 20 year life. They have never leaked....yet. Should I replace them?

If the skylights are the same age as the shingles, I would replace the skylights as well.

If they are significantly newer, I would agree with you to only re-flash the skylight curbs with new "ice and water shield", and new, painted aluminum step and pan flashing.

Good Luck

i do roof for a living , and i tell you that skylights is like roofing mateal. it 20 year forthe roof and skylight ,in 100% good waither. and there no place in u s a that have it. so that why they say replace them . becuase when you pull the metal to get to the flashing you can starte a leak and your roof can not be cover. change them you will be a head in a long run now it well cost you lot more then it would now. why pay a job double. cost keep going up.

i agree. although it may seem the roofer may be trying to enlarge the scope (and price) of the job, what he is suggesting really makes sense. 22 years is a great lifespan for a skylight. i have a friend in the roofing biz, and they have a saying..."a skylight is just a leak waiting to happen". go ahead and bite the bullet and have the work done as long as you are doing the roof, because you are just looking at the additional cost of the price of the skylights.

I would also. And the new skylights are more energy efficient than what you have now so you will be getting additional energy savings. And they might qualify as "windows" and you could get an additional tax credit from the feds.

I would. No sense having to tear up the roof 2 yrs from now
