I lost my Medeco key the other day that opens the front door to my apartment. Is there a way of duplicating it? I heard that almost all locksmiths aren't able to duplicate them because 1. It's illegal and 2. Some don't have the equipment. What should i do?

PS: I also do not intend on asking my Landlord because the key itself will cost a couple of hundred

Medeco is a restricted key system. You will not be able to get it duplicated. It requires special blanks, special key machine, and most importantly - the identification card from Medeco. The only way to get another one is from the landlord. Apartments use Medeco so that they know tenants cannot have extra keys made without their knowledge or permission.

Sorry it's not good news.

Some keys to common areas of apartments and offices are stamped "Do Not Duplicate" and the only place that could do it is a locksmith if you have written permission from the owner of the property.

There is no way to duplicate any key without an original to copy from, no matter what type it is, though on TV they can do it from a wax impression. Medeco locks are industrial products and not all hardware stores and other retail outlets have blanks that will fit them. It isn't the equipment, it's the actual blank keys that are missing from the equation.

You have very limited options. The best one is to find your key. You can try to borrow a neighbor's key and have it duplicated, but if it has the "Do Not Duplicate" stamp on it, you're going to have trouble finding someone to do it for you. The other is to go to the landlord and tell them you've lost your building key because there simply isn't a way to duplicate one that doesn't exist.

Sorry, I wish I had better news for you, but I don't want you to waste a lot of time and effort on solutions that won't work. If the key is a regular flat one with grooves and notches rather than a double ground computer style, then you'll have a much better chance of success because then its a question of whether you can find the actual blank key rather than someone with special machinery. But a reputable locksmith won't duplicate one with a stamp on it without authorization.
