Will my severed tree roots eventually decompose under my patio and flatten out my brickwork again?

Probably not very symmetrically but eventually they may flatten or sink some due to decomposition of the roots. Best thing to due is pull up the bricks and ground down the roots now, refill and compact well and lay the bricks again. Might as well enjoy a lovely and sturdy patio now instead of wait for one to magically appear...which it wont. hehe Peace.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. And, you might wish it were there again, you see once it rots there will be a hole, what did you think would fill in the tree root?

If there's still a chance, dig the roots up and replace them then pack the ground so the patio won't sag. That's what I had to do twice, I'm speaking from experience.

depends on the type of wood, how many years are you willing to wait?

in theory, if the bricks are pushed up, the wood that decays will leave a gap and then the bricks will sink.

go ahead and redo you brickwork and this time install a barrier underground around the edge to discourage tree roots

IT TOOK AWHILE TO GROW AND IT WILL DO THE SME TO DECOMPOSE. THERE IS A ORTHO PRODUCT CALL ROOT ROT WILL HELP BUT I DONT SEE QUICK RESULTS IN YOUR NEAR FUTURE. U MAY HAVE TO REMOVE THE BRICKS, REMOVE THE MAJORITY OF THE ROOTS WITH AXE OF STUMP GRINDER AND THEN REBRICK BACK TO DESIRED APPEARANCE

No the sand has shifted and this would take some time to go back to where you might like it.
