Insulation of cold tanks/pipes?

I'm getting a house and had a survey done, and it said un-insulated cold water tanks in the loft.
What would happen if I left it un-insulated?
Can I do the insulation myself?
How uch would it cost, roughly?

hi to quickly answer your question

nothing much woukd realy happen to your tanks , but the pipes have a chance of freezing up and causing you all manner of problems and hefty bills as they can burst realy easy as they freeze and thaw.

you can get tank jackets from most diy stores and they are norm sized in volume 10 gln 15 , 20 and so on .

foam pipes are available to size 15 cold water 22 hot water

thay norm have a split running down them and you open around the pipe slide on and then tape the split you can do it all your self allow up to an hour and dont forget the over flow pipe if it has or does drip it can back freeze in to your tank

cost dep on amount of materials but even 20 or 50 pounds is cheaper than 200 300 pounds for someone to do it for you

and repair bills if they burst , ceilngs carpets new pipes etc

hope this helps

worked insulation for several yrs

enjoy your new home

If you left your water tanks un insulated, in a very cold winter, they would freeze. You can buy insulation kits from a plumbers merchant for the water tanks, but don't forget to lag the water pipes. But even with lagging, anything over minus 10F and they will still freeze.

Foam pipe insulation comes in one meter lengths, bought from builder's merchant B & Q UK

Tanks don't really have to have insulation in the UK

Surveyors like to exaggerate. I only hope we don't get the weather that they are expecting.

In all other countries the scenario does'nt exist, as they don't have stored water in their attics.

it means the cold water tanks are not wrapped with a thermal jacket. you can do this yourself easily and you can but them at b and q. also check the pipes leading into the tank are insulated. b and q cangive you information leaflets on this matter.

Insulation jackets cost very little.

you'll probably need a lid & a "byelaw 30" kit on them too.
