Is it normal for a natural gas meter to make noise? Mine makes a humming/squealing sound when the furnace comes on. There is no sign or smell of gas leakage, but wasn't sure if this was indicitive of a problem or if the meter was just working hard.

You are hearing the sound made by the pressure reducing regulator. There's not neccesarily anything wrong with it - some regulators make noise. If it continues to draw your attention, call the gas company and advise them. They will send someone to check it out. They may end up replacing it or just telling you it's OK.

The meter should not be making noises.

No it is not normal. You have a leak there somewhere. Get the gas company to come and check on it. Do not put a fan out there...That could become a source of ignition! A regulator does NOT vent gas as the diaphragm moves. The vent simply allows atmospheric pressure behind the diaphragm so it can move smoothly as gas flow requirements change. If gas is coming out of the vent, then the regulator diaphragm is ruptured and the regulator must be replaced. The only other time gas would be expelled is if the regulator relief valve were to go off. But this doesn't take place unless the regulator is subject to somewhere between 180% and 300% of it's set pressure. That is a rare occurance indeed!

I'm honestly not sure about the noise, as it's been a long time (unfortunately) since I've lived in a place that uses gas heat. I'm with the answerer that says to check using soapy water; unfortunately, that doesn't work if it's cold enough outside, because the stuff freezes almost on contact. I'm a great fan of prevention, though, and if you have ANY doubt, call your gas company/utility, and ask them, or simply request that someone come out to check the meter. They have an interest in keeping the lines and people safe, and I'm sure they'll be happy to send someone out.

It is normal for it to make a little noise...Even if you don't smell gas, you might take a bottle of soapy water and spay on the connections just to be sure there is not a leak. If bubbles appear, there is a leak.

Mine used to sound like a foghorn when it started up. It's some sort of O-ring that needs to be replaced. Just call the gas company and they will fix it in a few minutes and it doesn't cost you.

i think they will make a hissing sound as the gas moves through them.
