The knob for the door on my room (but through research I see it is called a door lever- it is shaped like a horizontal very thin oval) has a small circle in the middle of it that I know is a part of the locking mechanism. Inside my room I can lock my door but the circle is on the outside which is used to lock/unlock it from the outside, but what can I use to do that?

If the door is locked and you are on the outside of the room a small nail or a fine screw driver something with a small point that will fit into the hole will open the door.

It is probably nothing complicated. The key to open that is nothing more than a flat blade shaped like a simple key. No cuts. Just a 1/4" or 1/8" flat piece with a hole on one end. Sometimes they just have a hole in them and then you can open it with a tiny nail or paperclip. That is an interior door and unless someone was ultra security conscious it is not a complicated lock. You could probably open it with a nail file or a paper clip. They put those kinds of locks on bedrooms and bathrooms.

take apart a ball point pen, get the plastic 'straw' that holds the ink. push that straight into the hole. you may be able to turn the handle.
