you should just replace hte whole unit but from the sounds of it it might be your compressor but they can cost alot to fix just buy a new unit....... the best one 2 buy is carrier or payne they last about 20yrs on avg.

You may need to replace the fan. Or replace the outside unit. Make sure you buy one that uses the same gas. If freon, buy a freon unit so not to mix gasses particularly if you don't have to replace the inside portion. I just replaced mine for about $1,500 and it was only six years old.

most unfortunate but you will have to replace the whole thing just don't do it in the height of summer because it will cost you twice as much, one more summer of noisy a/c wont make much difference and remember to shop around

Most of the increasing noise is often just from vibration.

First make sure it is on a solid pad. Some of the pads they use are very light. That can leave them rocking and vibrating.

Other than that you have to just find the parts that are vibrating and "adjust" them . That may mean shimming with rubber, tightening screws, even bending a panel or tubing.

Sometimes the copper tubing off the compressor is up against something. That will make a lot of noise. Because compressors vibrate by nature. But of course you need to be gentle because you don't want to kink or break it or you are in for big trouble.

And sometimes the rubber bumpers the compressor sits on can be replaced to help dampen it.

BUT in most cases excessive vibration from a compressor means it is going bad. The compressor itself, inside the can, is a small pump and motor that sits on three springs and excessive vibration means one of the springs is bad or broken. There is no fix for that other than replacing the compressor.

Good Luck.
