My dad had purchased an old timer hunting knife with a sheath in pocahontas county about 10 years ago. he had broken tip off after dropping it on a rock he was standing on. i was wondering if the warranty would still be good on the knife even though schrade went out of business and was taken over by taylor brands?

It depends solely on the policies of Taylor Brands now. If they're trying to build as loyal a customer base as Schrade had then they should honor the warrenty as long as you live.

If you truly have sensitive data on it, you should practice encryption. It "scrambles" the data in a code that only your computer can recognize, and prevents others from stealing your information. In regards to if they would let you destroy it, probably not. It would most likely be regarded as negligence. You could try formatting the drive with a hard disk diagnostic tool, with the recovery disk in windows. Update: If you are concerned with a hard drive being refurbished, they are sent to the manufacturer to repair. All hard drives are low level formatted before being resent out. Every single sector on the hard disk is wiped and check to verify its stability. A refurbished hard drive will not have any data on it.
