If you cannot disconnect the water pump it is possible to damage the pump if it runs dry for very long.

You have a pump in the bottom of swamp cooler that needs to be disconnected. It pumps the water up to the top of the cooler pads. You don't want the pump to be pumping dry.

won't damage it and it won't cool the air at all.

Swamp cooler without water is just a fan. No work on the water pump can be hard on it causing it to fail after extended use running dry.

The water pumps will overheat and burn up

Its not very smart to. Swamp coolers only are really effective when they have water to cool the air before its pushed through the fan. Its also not very good on the pumps which are designed to have water, not air, running through them. So yeah, if its an older cooler especially, its not good for it. If you're worried about the water getting swampy or dirty, pour in just a hint of bleach to kill off algae or insects.

Running the pump dry could damage it a good bit from heat build up. If you plan on just running the unit without water then shut off the pump.

It won't work very well, and yes will damage it over time.

Without the water, it's only a fan that draws twice the electricity.
