So, my neighbours just got a heat pump mounted rigth outside my bedroom window, and in -20 degrees celsius it makes helluvalot of noise, keeping me awake at nigth. They are both realy creepy and we are not what you would call friends. I was thinking of just throwing a dog turd in it, and filling their whole house with the smell of pooh. but that is kind of cruel i guess, and i would get trouble myself. A less evil option is to throw a bucket of water over it, freezing the whole damned thing up, but also that can easily be traced back to me.

I need some ideas, plese contribute for the sake of my sleep?

What kind of selfish little bastard are you?? Its not their responsibility to do anything; if you are that much of a mamby-pamby light sleeper then get a better window.

BTW: throwing canine feces into the unit would only chop it up and spread the smell around OUTSIDE, thereby having an apparently not soundproof window, would have served you up a nice helping of stink. (which you deserve)Throwing water at the unit would be useless as it has a defrost cycle and would last about 5 minutes.....

Just check your sack and grow a pair of nuts will ya?

For the sake of your sleep, get some ethics & morals,.... you'll sleep better.

(edit) thanks Marko, yeah I have seen the sound dampening pouches starting to show up in some units I am installing..... I always ask the homeowner if they want me to take the thing off due to the fact it also holds in a helluva lot of heat and the compressor is all but guaranteed to prematurely fail.... Plus, the new compressors are not reciprocal and don't make that much noise. I'm starting to get calls from people that aren't sure if their compressor is even running so I have the call center caution them that if nothing is wrong and I show up there is a minimum charge.....

I feel for your awful noise disturbance problem ....We also have the same problem next door with our neighbors dinosaur of a heat pump! The neighbor has loss of hearing and is in her 80's and needs to heat the home constantly - the high 70's! We tried to resolve this issue with her and her family, but with no real help. We had to get the City involved as a noise disturbance issue during quiet hours 10-7am. The neighbor was verbally sited on 2 occasions over the period of 3 visit's/6 weeks for the unit being above the city ordinance noise decibel. I kid you not, when this heat pump is running and the temp was in the 30's and below it would sound like a John Deer Tractor on the side of my home. We added insulated drapes to the window and installed temporary 4x8 ridged foam insulation panels (white) covering the bedroom wall, (purchased at Lowes). Also the neighbor was required by the City to make the unit compliant , which they added a new blanket wrap to the compressor. The City recommended the home owner also build a fence around the unit with sound proofing fencing, most likely our best bet. The home owner did not take this advise. To date we know the Heat Pump operates in and out of noise compliance in a 24hr period. The worst is night's when its colder. Believe me the worst disturbance a person can endure is sleep deprivation, and it will reach a point that a person can not take it anymore. It's has nothing to do with comments like, deal with it, add drape's or grow a set of balls( these people probably can't hear, own a heat pump or live in a trailer park! ) Ear plugs also will help some but not real comfortable to wear. Daily I hope the Heat Pump seizes up and the unit electrically crapes out!! Please answer my prayers.......

I dont think there is anywhere on earth that is -20 degrees celsius, where the hell do you live?

I dont think there is a heat pump that will operate below a certain temp. Most go to an electric heating back up when it gets below a design temp of the unit.

Sir, there is a sound blanket that you and your neighbor can buy to wrap around the compressor which will cut down the noise. Something like this: http://www.brinmar.com/sound_blankets.html

Have the neighbor contact their installer.

Neither of your current ideas would work. The unit is enclosed so no smell would enter the house. The fan would clear away the water. You may need insulated curtains.
