where can i buy them online and what is there official name? I'm referring to the kind that look like padlocks without keyholes(usually around commercial electrical metering equipment) and the kind that have a steel wire and plastic tag with numbers used to prevent unauthorized tampering with your electric meter. what are they and where can i find them online?

It depends on your local utility. In my area, you can catch a lot of flack if they catch you. Our local meters are all read through cell networks now (no meter reader). If the meter loses contact with its base, the power company is notified.

I'd suggest playing it safe and calling them.

those tags are unique to each utility and have serial numbers so they can trace tags. Your not going to find them anywhere. Just pull the meter, do what you need to do and then call the utility and tell them you had to pull the meter for a panel change. I do it all the time.

It is actually not that hard to call the utility company .

and say " What is the procedure to pull the meter " ?

"Can i pull it my self. and your guys come back to seal it back ? "

In my neck of the wood no charge .

Just in case your utility is weird about people tampering with their Seal.

I have 14 units of apt and frequently have to do utilities works. esp on the older building without a main fuse shutoff

We replaced my panel 2 years ago. No notice to power co. We simply cut off the seal and did the work. Some months later a new seal magically appeared and I never got any letter flak from electric co.
