Emergency relief valve replaced 3 times on hot water tank and it is still leaking!!?

I have used the white tape on each one. Any suggestions on what to do next? Please give me step by step insturctions. I really need to get this fixed!! Also recently I have noticed where the water comes in at the house (( the inside main??)) it has started to leak. I dont know if this could be related or not. I looks like it is leaking around the the thread are of where you turn the knob. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

The relief valve needs more then just tape,, you need to go to the hardware store and get some pipe dope.. put the Teflon tape on first then use the pipe dope over the tape,, this should stop that leak,, if it doesn't then the tank is cracked where the threads are,,,the valve coming into the house should have a packing nut around the stem,, use a wrench,, (adjustable or the right size wench) and tighten the nut clockwise a few turns,,, do not overtighten,,, just enough to stop the leak.. the two are not related,,, good luck,,

On the main water valve, if you are talking about the threads which are surrounding the stem and handle, this is a packing gland and nut, Take an adjustable wrench or Channel Lock pliers and tighten the nut surrounding the stem, turning it gently until it stops leaking.



On the relief valve, if you are replacing it because the threads are leaking, apply the tape on the threads so when you tighten the valve into the tank threads, the end of the tape is not being torn off. Hold the valve in your left hand and wrap the tape away from you over the threads. Wrap the threads about 3 times holding it snugly as you wrap.



If that is not it, the tank may have a crack at the threads.

Regarding the T-P relief valve, if it's leaking around the threads you need to first remove the old teflon tape and re-wrap it. Then use pipe dope (a white goop applied with a brush) on the threads and then tighten it up.



For the latter, the packing is leaking. You might be able to tighten the packing nut, located behind the handle, with a wrench. Don't go ape on it, just snug it down about an eighth of a turn and see if the leak stops.
