amps times volts equals watts. for example, .5 amps at 120 volts = 60 watts...... a typical light bulb.

Think of electricity as water flowing through a hose. Voltage is the water pressure, current is the water flow, so wattage is basically the strength of what comes out the end of the hose. (Not the best analogy, but you get the idea. I hope.)
