That is correct. There is a panel that is held in place by 2 screws. Remove the panel and the insulation under it. There is a small screw that adjusts the temperature setting. Set it where you want. It is probably not necessary to set it all the way up, half way should do fine. Then replace the insulation and the panel.

If it Electric open top panel and remove the Fiberglass and a possible plastic over the Electrical, there should be a small knob to turn, it may require a Flathead/Phillips screwdriver. Adjust in small amounts until you have the Desired Temp. If, it gas it on top of the Valve at the Bottom just look. Use a Flashlight. Be real careful about adjusting too Hot, many people have been Scalded from too Hot of water. Many warning about this.

Call a plumber! If the water temp has suddenly changed, you have a bad thermostat or a bad element. doesn't matter if it's gas or electric if the temp has changed you need a pro to check it out for you. If the water has always been too cold and you adjust the temp. you could cause a fatal injury. If you must make adjustments yourself, make very small adjustments and wait an hour and then test to see what difference you have made. Be careful!

12 yrs. is a long time for a tank to last. Still, as long as you've invested this much time, and it's not leaking, maybe you bought a defective reset. If you got. it at home depot they probably will exchange it. Make sure the replacement is for the 220 V unit you have. The upper thermostat/reset button are integral. Change it out and make sure both upper and lower therms. are set no higher then 150 degrees.

If it's electric, be aware there are hot wires around the thermostats. Also if there are two thermostats (top & bottom) they must be set to the same temp.
