Question:
The burners fail to light on my Tempstar gas furnace?

The inducer motor starts and the igniter pilot lights, stays on for about two seconds, then goes off. The burners do not light. If I unplug the furnace for a few minutes, The burners will start for a few seconds when it is plugged in. This is an intermittent problem.

"Intermittent problems" sounds like one of the

new fangled electronically controlled furnaces

because

usually the old fashion thermocouple/gas valve furnaces work or they don't. *L*

Easiest, cheapest thing to do is check all the electrical connections (including grounds).

If this doesn't solve the problem then the fun (and expense) begins - checking components...

One frequently overlooked problem w/both types of furnaces is low incoming gas pressure.

Normally your gas supplier will check (and adjust) this at no charge.

It's best to have the pressure at the more than the furnace manufacturer's minimum to allow for any excursion caused by high gas system demand.

Probably the smart valve itself. Your pilot is lighting but the valve is not opening the main valve either because control part of the valve has an intermittent problem or the valve mechanically wont open. These are expensive since the ignition control and the gas valve are all in one.

It sounds like you may have a dirty flame sensor or an intermittent fault with the control board. For more info including a step by step troubleshooting guide, check out the furnace page at my source.

Do yourself a favor and call a repairman. I don't think anyone on Yahoo! Answers will solve this. You already have a couple of answers and I know you don't want to fix it answer by answer until you find the right answer.

Also consider this, some companies sell service contracts mine for example has one that they check the furnance twice a year for $100. the good part is, if it breaks down in between you get 20% off of parts and labor.

Generally in a gas furnace its the thermal coupling that prevents it from staying lit. It will most likely need replacing.

That is true, I have a maintenance contract with my gas co. If anything goes wrog they come out and fix it. Dont like dealing with gas.

sounds like you have a blockage in your vent. You should have your exhaust checked to make sure it is clear.
