I've a 1.5hp pump and it's lasted a little over 4 years... just checked and wsant working so I pulled the cover plate off the electrical panel and there isn't anything in there but charcoal. A new motor costs about $500 and a new pump costs about $750....

So what causes it??

For starters, the pump motor needs to be protected from the elements, but at the same time there must be enough openings built into the protection to allow sufficent air movement to prevent the motor from overheating. Additionally, certain motors contain a location where both end bearings can be manually lubercated. this should be done about once per year, depending on hours of actual run time. If an electric motor is maintained well,my opinion is it should last a long long time

Damaging your neighbor's pool or circulating pump is malicious property damage, which could get you in 'way more trouble than the matter is worth. If you live in a municipality or an incorporated township, there may be a noise ordinance that will cover the pump. Check with the police captain or the county sheriff, as applicable. Don't damage the pump or the pool yourself. Jail time is not worth it. If you find the noise ordinance covers the noise of the pump, then let the law enforcement agency handle it. Otherwise it is best to discuss it with the offending neighbor. Does she know she is causing you a problem? How long has this been going on? Is it possible she doesn't realize yet how much it will cost her? Call the electric company and ask them for an estimate, so you will have that figure in hand when you talk to the neighbor. "Do you realize it does not have to run all the time, and that it is wasting you $X per month?" Also ask her if she would mind putting a sound deadening enclosure around it, or even letting you do it at your expense. It is true that a lot of people are just hateful, and your neighbor may not want to cooperate. Use the law if you must, and be sure to let her know she is being a bad neighbor. Sometimes it takes a while for that to sink in, and she will reconsider after weeks or months. But don't commit a crime, yourself, in the process. Let things work out. As a last resort, get an MP3 player with some nice noise-cancelling earphones. You will get used to wearing them sooner than you think. Good luck!

If you did not clean the filter often it could stress the pump. You could have a line that is partially blocked, stressing the pump. I think the cost of the new motor and pump deserve a skilled pool man to check it out to find the problem. Its even possible it was not installed correctly.

Pumps usually only last 4 to 5 years due to chlorine and normal wear eating seals around the shaft allowing moisture and condensation to enter motor windings area causing shortages between case and windings. I just normally count on a pump every 4 yrs in my budget when estimating pool cost.

did you let water level drop below the level of skimmer ? if this happened this will cause pump motor and pump to over heat,i have seen some literlly melt do to extreme heat it is very important the water level be half the height of mouth of skimmer.skimmer mouth should be half water half air going into skimmer.this should be watched closely during summer
