If your child put cotton wool down the toilet,then it didn't flush,?

Question

what would be the best method to solve the problem?Without phoning a plumber?
If the toilet kept filling up to the very top,then taking hours to go back down?
Is there some type of toxic liquid that can be put down?

Not a problem. If the toilet is the only drain in the house that isn't draining correctly your in luck. The piece of fabric hasn't gotten to far down the drain to grab with a snake. You get buy a snake at any home improvement/hardware store. They're not that expensive. You can get one that will work for you for about $12. Way cheaper than a plumber. A snake looks like a long coiled flexible spring. The end of it that goes down the drain will look like the spring has been unwound, and slightly larger (in diameter) than the rest of the snake. This end acts as a boring device in your drain. Feed the snake down the drain until it hits the piece of fabric. When you feel it hit the fabric start twisting the snake in the direction that would make the spring/coil tighter. As you twist it, the end will grab the fabric, and get tangled up in the end. After some twisting, just pull the snake right back out of the drain, and the fabric should come out of the drain all wrapped up in the end of the snake. It may take a couple tries, but it's way cheaper than a plumber, and just as effective. I guarantee you if you call a plumber that's excactly what he'll do. If for some reason it doesn't work all your out is about $12. Don't put anything to corosive into your drain, because it can eat thru your pipes too. You want to talk about a mess, and a huge expense. Try pulling out all your sheet rock, and replacing all your pipes because you poured some killer acid down them.

Also don't try to push it down farther, because if it gets too far down into your drain system it can cause other drains in the house to back up as well.

I'm afraid your hand is the only thing that will solve it - you'll have to try and get it out. The back of the toilet is a bend and its probably stuck there. Just carefully take it out bit by bit and it will be fine - If you call an expensive plumber like me l will only use my hand too! ;-)

Unravel a wire coat hanger and try to push the cotton wool under the ubend.Use kinda like a plunger.My children did this once and I found that this worked

I wouldn't recommend the coathanger solution - it scratches the bowl, leaving marks which trap "dirt" and germs. A garden hose might work, but I would always recommend that flexible curtain wire that's often used to hang net curtains. Be forceful with it, work it back and forth quite roughly, remove any cotton wool that surfaces and you will eventually break up the rest so it can be flushed away.

And if that doesn't work, call a professional!

Have you tryed a Plunger? alot of items just get stuck in the S part of the toilet and block anythig from passing. A Plunger uses air pressure to force the blockage out of the S. If this dosent work the Plummer...

nothing is going to disolve cotton wool, nothing that you can legally put down a toilet anyway!

wait until your child has definately learned a lesson about experimenting with the toilet and then find something flexable, and over a meter long and start prodding!

You need to work the plunger like the house is on fire and cross your fingers. The plunger may dislodge it and allow it to flush. If that does not work try a four foot auger. If that doesn't work, it's plumber time. Good Luck.

make the child stick it's arm down and unblock it, naw that sounds like my Father. No idea cotton wool is NOT going to dissolve with household cleaners or even caustic soda. try a piece of garden hose.

If it is closer to the entry or exit points of drain pipe, pull it out with a wire or steel rod hook.

Otherwise try to pump/suck is out.

If nothing works, stop using for a couple of days and pour some acid and flush under pressure.

Use a wire coat hanger (hook end) to pull the cotton wool fibres out if you can reach them.....keep flushinf once you've dislodged some. Good luck!

Lift the cotton wool out with your hands, use of marigolds (gloves) may be useful!!
