Question:
Coleman Powermate 1000 generator pull start stuck?

I started my Powermate 1000 generator and it ran for about 5 minutes, started idling erratically and shut off. I then tried to start it again only to find that the cord would only move about 2 inches and then stop. I removed the cover and I could see that there is a metal piece (possibly some kind of safety feature) that stopped the wheel from turning and allowing the cord to be pulled out. I've heard of other small engines with floats in the oil that will stop an engine from started when it gets low, but this is a 2 cycle motor and does not have a place to put any oil (apart from the mix, of course).
Does anyone have an ideas? Thanks!

It sounds to me that the starter spring is sticking out and that's is what you are seeing ?

Does the cord go back in the housing when you pull on it or not without it on the engine, sometimes the spring will come lose from the housing where the spring will lock on to and also will come lose on the pulley that holds the cord in , look around the outside of the housing where it might lock on to the spring might need to be winded back up and a new cord to be put in as well , check to see before trying to start it again

As for the idling problem , check the air filter for debris change it if needed , bad gas + dirt in the gas tank , clog fuel filter , punch off gas line starving for fuel also check your gas can for dirt inside it as well

you may have a tangle in your pull start cord. I own a powermate 1850 and this has happened twice to me before.

If you can't pull the cord, the engine is most likely seized
